Promos Past and Present

"Diwali aye Kushiyan laye, lekin yaad rakhiye Phuljadi patakhe ghar ke andar nahin balki ki ghar ke bahar lagani chaieye". This was the promo shown on Doordarshn during 80's by bollywood dream girl Hema Malini. Whether it is Diwali or Holi or how to use a telephone or crossing a railway line, every message used to be telecasted in the doordarshan through promos. Message was clear; to make people aware and educate.
Who can forget the Unity and National intergration promo " ek tithili anekh tithliyan, ek gilheri anekh gilheriyan" and the boy who had forgot to bring his tiffin box to the school and the whole class comes forward to share their tiffin with the boy. I was in the school and these promos used to be a lot to me. I grew up with doordarshan. I had learnt lot many things and I am proud of it.
Those days there was only channel but unlimited entertainment, infotainment and above all the general promos with a hidden lesson to educate children. But now with channels galore, I can hardly see any of them showing such promos. If any, either it is for AIDS awareness or Pulse Polio Immunisation.
Promos now means only related to their events or programs. And why not even promos now have ad tariffs. The number of times the promo is aired, at the end it is said that this program is sponsored by .........(the respective sponser). When every second on the air costs lakhs. Why will the private channel telecase promos showing social service messages ? After all money matters isns't it !
If you ask a kid about Bam Bam Bigalo (WWF) and VJ Ranvir or VJ Nikhil they will have a readymade answer and but if you ask them about Unity in diversity maybe they may blink. What you (show) shall you reap.
